Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz
Mainz
Physics
Subjects: Physics
M.Sc. | Master of Science
Course description
Physics explores the realm of inanimate nature. It's a cornerstone for other natural sciences and many engineering fields. Physicists use two main methods to understand nature: they record natural processes quantitatively through experiments and describe the observed laws using mathematical language. From these theoretical models, new predictions are made and tested in various applications. When these models hold up under scrutiny, they become known as natural laws. If new phenomena are discovered that don't fit existing theories, more comprehensive models are developed. This dual approach explains the division of physics into theoretical and experimental branches. At the University of Mainz's Department of Physics, research spans several key areas: quantum physics, condensed matter physics, atmospheric physics (meteorology), nuclear and hadron physics, and particle and astroparticle physics. Mainz boasts a rich research environment, supported by numerous large-scale facilities and research institutes, including various Max Planck Institutes. The lecture series at Mainz directly introduces students to modern research, offering a broad and diverse educational experience.
