Course description
The degree program imparts both specialized knowledge and interdisciplinary skills. In the first semester, students gain theoretical insights and practical abilities related to the cultivation of microbes, gene expression, and protein production in microbial host systems, including fungi and protists. During the second and third semesters, students delve deeper into compulsory modules within the thematic pillars of "Functional Tools," "Productive Biosystems," and "Application Technologies." The course catalog offers a variety of classes, allowing students to tailor their focus. Both semesters feature laboratory rotations tied to the current research of the program's working groups. These rotations enhance students' experience and skills in independent scientific work. Students join two different, self-selected working groups, gaining firsthand insight into the research process. They expand their experimental knowledge and methodological skills, such as literature research, hypothesis development, and the planning, execution, and evaluation of experiments. Teamwork in these settings also helps them develop key qualifications like communication, teamwork, work organization, time management, and project planning.

Qualification Requirements
To be admitted to the degree program, candidates must have completed a first vocational university degree recognized in Germany or a qualification from a state or state-approved vocational academy in a scientific field such as biology, biotechnology, or life sciences or in a closely related degree program such as biochemistry or biophysics. Moreover, fundamental knowledge of genetics, molecular biology, and microbiology, as well as sufficient motivation for the degree program are required. Furthermore, this degree program also requires English language proficiency at the advanced level of B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Proof of this particular suitability is provided by an aptitude assessment in accordance with the aptitude assessment regulations.

• Module descriptions of relevant modules as well as copies of additional certificates and proof documenting any special suitability, such as proof of degree program-specific vocational training, voluntary internships, or similar activities related to the planned degree program • Proof of English language skills at the advanced level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Proof should be provided using a relevant certificate or language certificate. This can take the form of: a) A certificate of a general or subject-specific university entrance qualification with an advanced course completed in English b) A certificate for a university entrance qualification completed entirely in English or a diploma for a university degree completed entirely in English, as well as the c) Following examples of English certificates: TOEFL (79 internet-based), IELTS (6.5), UNIcert II • Descriptions (or comparable content summaries) of completed coursework that may constitute the prerequisites for participation in the modules ‘Physiological Concepts of Microbe Cultivation,’ ‘Microbial Expression Hosts and Protein Production,’ and ‘Microbial Ecology of Fungi and Protists’ • A tabular resumé in English with an educational and a career history • An informal cover letter in English that convincingly explains the desire to study and the individual’s particular aptitude • At least one personalized signed letter of recommendation that justifies the special aptitude of the applicant for the master’s degree in Molecular Biosciences and Productive Biosystems
