Course description

The MA degree program in North American Studies offers a comprehensive, transdisciplinary exploration of North America within a global framework. This course encourages a deep, critical understanding of cultural theories, transatlantic relations, and globalization processes. The curriculum examines the interaction between political and economic structures and literary and cultural narratives. It delves into the dynamics of race, class, gender, and sexuality, and scrutinizes the United States and Canada as cultural, political, and economic entities. Key areas of research include literary and cultural theory, Native and Indigenous studies, gender studies, environmental studies, visual culture studies, and the intersections of law and culture. The program also fosters dialogues between cultural studies and the natural sciences. As both a study program and a research institution, the North American Studies Program hosts numerous conferences and a lecture series on North American and cultural studies topics. It benefits from long-standing partnerships with North American universities. The core faculty comprises experts in literary and cultural studies, political science, and economics, along with visiting scholars. Students with an interest in historical and postcolonial studies gain additional insights through the program’s collaboration with the University of Cologne. This program is designed to be inclusive, fostering an environment of trust and understanding, and aims
