Course description
Students in this program learn to write professionally and engage in linguistic discourse in a context-related, appropriate, and reflective manner. They work independently on linguistics-related questions, acquiring skills in areas such as expert-layperson communication and mentoring international students. The program emphasizes project work, allowing students to gain practical skills early on. They regularly organize events at the university and in the city, including exhibitions, readings, plays, and conferences. A mandatory four-week internship and various projects provide students with experience in non-university settings and help them establish valuable contacts. The languages of instruction are German and English. In many courses at the Department of Cultural Studies, local students study alongside guest students from around the world in what is known as the “Intercultural Classroom.” Students enhance their international cultural skills during a semester abroad, which should be completed at a university where English is the primary language of communication. During the orientation phase in October, students choose their minor subjects, which should align with professional fields such as technical communication, intercultural communication, media communication, German or English as a foreign language, and online media communication. The interdisciplinary integration of the core subject and minor subjects prepares students for their future careers.

An interest in language, in particular German and English, is a basic prerequisite. Good to very good English language skills (equivalent to Level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages are recommended, since the language of instruction for the courses in English/American studies is English.
