Johann Wolfgang Goethe University Frankfurt am Main
Frankfurt am Main
Southeast Asian Studies
Subjects: Southeast Asian Studies
M.A. | Master of Arts
Course description
The Master's in Southeast Asian Studies at Goethe University of Frankfurt is designed for students with a solid grasp of Bahasa Indonesia or Bahasa Malaysia and familiarity with the region. This program offers an in-depth exploration of the languages, cultures, and societies of Southeast Asia, with a particular emphasis on the Malay World, which includes Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei Darussalam, Singapore, and East Timor. The curriculum integrates a philological cultural studies approach with the flexibility to utilize the diverse resources available across various departments at the university. This interdisciplinary framework encourages innovative research for the Master's thesis in Southeast Asian Studies. Students can choose between two versions of the study program: one includes a semester abroad, while the other does not. Regardless of the choice, all students must complete four mandatory core modules. Additionally, there are three elective modules, with options such as Studium Generale, allowing students to select courses from different faculties if they opt for the version without a semester abroad. This program is structured to foster a deep understanding of Southeast Asian cultures and societies, promoting both academic rigor and personal growth.
