Course description
At Saarland University, the subject "English: Linguistics, Literatures, and Cultures" is available as both a major and minor in dual-subject bachelor's programs. This course aims to equip students with the skills to navigate the target cultures of English, spoken and written by an estimated 1.5 billion people worldwide. The program focuses on mastering the English language in both spoken and written forms, providing a foundational understanding of contemporary linguistics, and offering extensive knowledge of various text types from English-speaking cultures, including literary texts, specialist texts, and everyday conversations. Additionally, students will explore current research fields and techniques in electronic processing. The course is structured to help students understand inter- and transcultural connections, preparing them for diverse professional fields such as international business, media, cross-cultural institutions, publishing, and education. The curriculum is divided into four main areas: literary studies, cultural studies, linguistics, and language practice. From the first semester, students complete partial examinations, with those in the major subject undertaking about a third more exams than those in the minor subject, including a two-month bachelor's thesis.
