Course description

Studying teacher education in English equips you with the professional skills needed to teach English at a German Gymnasium. The program includes courses in literature, linguistics, and language skills. In the literary modules, you'll learn to analyze and critically reflect on the literatures and cultures of the English-speaking world, including Great Britain, Ireland, the USA, Canada, and post-colonial cultures of the Commonwealth. You'll cover literature from the Middle Ages to the present, exploring all genres—prose, poetry, and drama. You'll also delve into various methodologies from literary theory, literary history, and cultural studies. The linguistic modules focus on the structure and history of the English language. Core areas include phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics. You may also study language acquisition and English varieties. Practical courses aim to improve your English language skills. You'll attend classes on regional studies, oral proficiency, reading comprehension, writing, translation, and grammar. Additionally, the program includes didactics and education classes. There's also a module that offers the option to study abroad, enriching your learning experience. This comprehensive approach ensures you gain the expertise to teach English effectively in secondary education.

Application Requirements

Language Requirements

You have to document skills in English and another modern foreign language or in Latin (Latinum). For this you have to document either 4 years of classes in secondary education or 3 years of classes in the last 3 years before completing your general higher education entrance qualification (Abitur). Required final grade: "ausreichend/sufficient" or better. You can submit the certificate of your higher education entrance qualification to do so. Alternatively you can submit a certificate level B2 of the Common European framework of reference for languages (CEFR). You can catch up on missing skills in the other modern foreign language during your first semester, either at our Language Institute (SLI) or a suitable, accepted external provider. We do not carry out our own language tests to determine your aptitude. German language skills International applicants need documentation of their German language skills, level DSH-2 or TestDaF 4, or a language test recognised as equivalent. The University of Konstanz does not offer preparatory German language courses or approved German language exams. For this reason, you must submit accredited proof of your German language skills along with your application.

Qualification Requirements

General higher education entrance qualification (Abitur) or recognised equivalent. You will find the current regulations for the selection process in the admission regulations. Mandatory online test Before applying for our Bachelor of Education programme you need to take an online self-test. The test will help you to decide whether teaching and working daily with children and adolescents is suitable for you. Please send in your test certificate together with your application papers.

Document Requirements

During the online application process, you will need to enter various kinds of information (school grades, attendance periods etc.) and upload various PDF documents. Please make sure that you have the relevant documentation ready. This may include: your Abitur certificate (German general higher education entrance qualification) documentation of any volunteering you may have done (FSJ, FÖJ etc.) any documentation about vocational training you may have completed any other required documents (medical certificate etc.)
