Course description

Biology plays a crucial role in shaping 21st-century societies. Biological processes impact humanity profoundly, and biological methods can challenge long-standing norms, including human rights. Each person is unique due to genetics and upbringing, making societal responses to biological issues fair to some and unfair to others. Clear and straightforward communication of biological processes, methods, and potential injustices is essential, without oversimplifying. In the "Biology in Society" program, we aim to provide students with a deep understanding of genetics, developmental biology, evolution, reproduction, and physiology in both animals and plants, emphasizing their societal relevance. We cover research ethics, animal testing, animal welfare, science communication, and the societal implications of science. One semester is dedicated to hands-on research projects in laboratories chosen by the students. This program equips students with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills, preparing them to navigate and address the complex biological issues that influence our world.

Language Requirements

A further requirement is proficiency in the English language at the B2 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages is also required. The following documents are accepted as proof: Certificate of general or subject-specific university entrance qualification with a basic or advanced course completed in English or comparable levels, a university entrance qualification completed entirely in English or a certificate of a university degree completed entirely in English, TOEFL test (internet-based) with at least 75 points overall and at least 18 points in each sub-category , IELTS test with at least level 6.0 passed in all sub-categories or UNIcert test with at least level II.

Qualification Requirements

A BSc or higher degree in Biology or related topic (or completed 80% of it). BSc-level knowledge in zoology, botany, including physiology, molecular biology, genetics, evolution, and statistics. One of these may be missing - you would have to catch up with it yourself, though. A meaningful letter of motivation: tell us clearly why do you want to study "Biology ion Society". It does NOT help to copy online blabla like "I am highly motivated to pursue this programme, as it aligns perfectly with my academic background and long-term career aspirations". Most people are not suitable for the course because their motivation letter is insufficient. Just say in simple words why do you want to study BioS.

• A formal application to undergo aptitude testing in English • A letter of motivation to degree course • Module descriptions (or comparable content summaries) of completed coursework that may be considered prerequisites for participation in the modules ‘Biology and Human Society,’ ‘Science for Society,’ and ‘Economically Important Animals and Plants’ • Copies of certificates and proof demonstrating any special aptitude in accordance with § 5 of the Aptitude Assessment Regulations • CV outlining your education history • Proof of English language skills at the advanced level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages in accordance with Sec. 2(2)(2). Proof should be provided using a relevant certificate or language certificate. This can take the form of: a) A certificate of a general or subject-specific university entrance qualification with an advanced course completed in English b) A certificate for a university entrance qualification completed entirely in English or a diploma for a university degree completed entirely in English, as well as the c) Following examples of English certificates: TOEFL (79 internet-based), IELTS (6.5), UNIcert II
