Course description
The Molecular Biotechnology degree program aims to cultivate a new generation of biotechnologists with deep expertise in biochemistry, microbiology, and physiology. This interdisciplinary program, offered collaboratively by the departments of chemistry, pharmacy, and biology, encompasses both a bachelor's and a master's degree. Unlike the typical "technology-oriented biotechnology" programs that focus on technical content and process engineering methods, the Molecular Biotechnology course at JGU takes a unique approach. Here, "biotechnology" emphasizes the identification, development, and application of processes and components derived from microorganisms. Special focus is given to discovering and characterizing pharmaceutically active substances from these microorganisms and understanding their biosynthetic pathways. These identified lead structures are then used to develop active ingredients for disease therapy and plant protection. The Molecular Biotechnology course provides a solid foundation for future interdisciplinary work in research-oriented environments.
