Course description
The new master’s degree program in English and American Studies / English Linguistics at the University of Stuttgart replaces the previous master’s degree program in English Studies (Anglistik). This program is divided into two distinct parts: "English Linguistics" and "English and American Studies." Students must choose one of these paths at the beginning of their course. The "English and American Studies" track encompasses the Department of American Literature and Culture and the Department of English Literatures. These departments delve into canonical texts and explore themes such as post-modernism, post-colonialism, interdisciplinary cultural studies, and media studies. On the other hand, the "English Linguistics" track is managed by the Department of English Linguistics. This department focuses on core linguistic disciplines like phonetics, syntax, morphology, and semantics. It also covers the history of the English language and examines phonetic, cognitive, and neurolinguistic aspects of language acquisition. By choosing either "English Linguistics" or "English and American Studies," students align their studies with the specific research strengths and academic focus of these departments. This structure ensures a comprehensive and specialized education in their chosen field.
