English Linguistics
Subjects: English;English Studies;Linguistics;Language
B.A. | Bachelor of Arts
Course description
English linguistics explores the characteristics and expressions of the English language using scientific methods and theories. It focuses on describing the key structural levels of contemporary language, such as sentence structure (syntax), form formation (morphology), vocabulary structure (lexicology and lexicography), phonetics (phonetics and phonology), and meaning (semantics). Additionally, it examines the historical development of the language. Building on this foundation, various sub-disciplines address current, interdisciplinary, and practical topics. These include sociolinguistics, pragmatics, first and second language acquisition, language contact, corpus linguistics, and specialist languages. Courses in these areas aim to help students understand how language functions. They also teach students to interpret and produce texts and statements accurately, considering their structural properties and their cultural and extra-linguistic contexts. By studying these subjects, students gain a comprehensive understanding of language mechanics. They learn to analyze and create texts with an awareness of both linguistic structures and the broader cultural environment. This knowledge fosters a deeper appreciation of language and its role in communication.
