Course description

The MA in English and American Literary and Cultural Studies offers a rich blend of advanced coursework, a semester abroad at partner universities, and practical work experience, including an international internship. Students delve into a wide array of English-language texts, spanning from medieval to contemporary literatures and cultures. The program emphasizes cultural studies methodologies, enabling students to specialize in areas like popular culture, gender studies, or political rhetoric. Critical analysis of literary genres and visual media, such as photography, film, TV, and comics, is central to the curriculum. Students can also choose from various interdisciplinary courses as part of their electives (Studium Generale) and gain hands-on experience as teaching assistants or by participating in departmental research projects. To qualify for the MA program, students need a BA in English or American Studies with a focus on literature and culture, or another relevant humanities degree. Applicants from other fields may need to acquire foundational knowledge in English and American Studies during their first semester in Paderborn. Proficiency in spoken and written English is essential for admission, with practical language courses available to help students achieve C2 level. Since all classes are conducted in English, no prior knowledge of German is necessary.
