Course description

The study of literature and culture thrives on a deep understanding of the interplay between form (discours) and content (histoire). Whether in novels, narrative poetry, drama, film, television series, comics, graphic novels, or video games, stories are always mediated through form. This holds true for texts we understand as transnational, transcultural, or postcolonial. In your essay, draw upon a text, a piece of artistic expression, or an example from linguistics to explain and demonstrate how literary form influences transnational, transcultural, or postcolonial cultural production. Consider narrative levels, syntactic and semantic structures, narrative structures, composition, intertextuality, paratextual elements, language use, and more. For instance, think about how a novel's narrative structure can reflect the complexities of postcolonial identity. Or how the syntactic choices in a piece of narrative poetry might reveal underlying cultural tensions. Examine how intertextuality in a graphic novel can bridge different cultural contexts, or how the paratextual elements of a video game can enhance its transnational appeal. By analyzing these elements, you can uncover the ways in which form shapes and is shaped by the cultural and historical contexts
