Course description

The Master’s Programme in Speech and Language Processing is crafted for post-graduate students aiming to build on their bachelor's degree in linguistics or a related field. This programme delves into both the dysfunctional and functional aspects of human and automated language processing, covering spoken and written forms. You can choose to specialise in either Human Language Processing or Machine Language Processing. In this programme, you will explore various study subjects that enhance your understanding of language mechanisms. The curriculum is designed to provide a comprehensive grasp of how language is processed, both by humans and machines. This includes studying the intricacies of speech recognition, natural language understanding, and the development of language technologies. By focusing on Human Language Processing, you will gain insights into the cognitive and neurological aspects of how people comprehend and produce language. Alternatively, specialising in Machine Language Processing will equip you with the skills to develop and refine algorithms that enable computers to understand and generate human language. This programme is structured to ensure you acquire both theoretical knowledge and practical skills. Qualification Requirements

Admission requirement is an above-average qualifying degree with the grade "good" (2.5) or better of a three-year (or more) study programme in the field of "Linguistics" (minimum degree: Bachelor of Arts [BA] or equivalent) at an institution of higher education or 'Berufsakademie'. In exceptional cases applicants may be admitted who have completed their qualifying degree (grade "good" 2.5 or better) in another, comparable study programme with academic achievements that make a successful participation in the Master's Programme in Speech and Language Processing likely. Documentation of advanced English language skills (spoken and written English), level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Documentation of your academic degree including details on course work. If you have not received your degree certificate by the end of the application deadline, please attach documentation of all your examination results so far. Documentation of advanced English language skills (spoken and written), level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Documentation of advanced French language skills (spoken and written), level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (only for applicants of the Double Degree Option. The Double Degree Option always starts in the winter semester). An application letter in English (at most one page), providing information on your motivation and suitability for the study programme. If your documents are not available in German or English, you will need to have them translated. Please submit a German or English translation of your documents along with the original versions.
