M.A. | Master of Arts
Course description
The master's program in Buddhist Studies focuses on the scientific examination of Buddhist traditions, their ethical teachings, and philosophical viewpoints. This independent course of study is unique in Germany and has gained significant international recognition. At the University of Hamburg, the emphasis is on researching the intellectual history of Buddhism and exploring its manuscript cultures. The International Master’s Program “Buddhist Studies” allows students to specialize in one of five regions: India, Tibet, China, Japan, or Thailand. The language of instruction varies by region—English for India, Tibet, and Thailand, and both English and German for China and Japan. A key component of the program is the acquisition and deepening of language skills relevant to the chosen region. Buddhism is not viewed in isolation. The program examines how Buddhism interacts with the culture, society, and intellectual and religious history of each region. Methodology and scientific approaches are also central to the curriculum. Students without prior international experience must complete a semester abroad. The specialist library for Buddhist studies at the University of Hamburg boasts an excellent collection of relevant works, making it an attractive choice for researchers. This program offers a comprehensive and immersive study experience, fostering a deep understanding of Buddhism in its various forms and contexts.
