Structural Engineering
Subjects: Engineering
B.Sc. | Bachelor of Science
Course description
Structural engineers focus on the planning, design, manufacture, and operation of buildings and other structures within civil, structural, traffic, and hydraulic engineering projects. The Structural Engineering B.Sc. program offers a comprehensive education in engineering, mathematics, and natural sciences. The core curriculum includes classic construction disciplines such as statics, concrete construction, and steel construction, enabling students to tackle fundamental construction-related challenges. The geo-engineering component covers substructure and soil mechanics, providing a solid foundation in these critical areas. Students will also gain knowledge of international construction regulations, as well as national regulatory frameworks and statutory norms. The construction management segment of the course addresses the execution of major building projects, focusing on quality assurance and financial aspects like cost control. Environmental considerations and natural sciences are integrated into the urban water management and hydraulic engineering modules. Hydraulics, a specialty of the University of Duisburg-Essen, features prominently in both Bachelor's and Master's level lectures. Our interdisciplinary, ecologically-oriented approach is rooted in Germany's industrial Ruhr region, where the university is located. However, we maintain an international perspective, preparing students to address environmental issues in their own countries.

Applicants who did not acquire their study qualification at a German-speaking institution must provide proof of German language skills corresponding to level B1 of the European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). When enrolling, applicants must demonstrate knowledge of the English language corresponding to level B1 of the European Framework of Reference for Languages. Studying in a bachelor's degree program in ISE requires proof of level B2 in both languages as a condition for graduation. The language courses required in individual cases are part of the course. Immediately upon beginning their studies, students must undergo placement tests to determine their knowledge of German and English and to be placed in courses in accordance with sentence 1. German language skills corresponding to level B2 are a prerequisite for admission to the German-language modules, as well as for admission to the German-language examinations from the 3rd semester onwards.
Qualification Requirements
Foreign applicants who are not equal to Germans through or on the basis of international treaties and who do not provide evidence of a university entrance qualification obtained in Germany must also prove their ability to study in a special examination. The special ability to study within the meaning of sentence 1 is deemed to be proven if the applicant has taken the subject of mathematics in the last 3 years of the previous education leading to direct university entrance and completed it with a grade of 2.0 or better.
