Course description

The English teaching degree program covers a broad spectrum of linguistics, literature, and cultural studies in English-speaking regions. Students gain a comprehensive understanding of both classical and modern English-language literature and culture, alongside current issues in structural and applied linguistics. The curriculum emphasizes Great Britain, North America, and the post-colonial world. This interdisciplinary approach ensures that the study of language, literature, and culture is always examined through historical, philosophical, political, and media studies lenses. Beyond the core subjects, the program includes practical language modules focusing on grammar, vocabulary, and linguistic expression. From the second year, students can tailor their studies through compulsory elective modules. They can specialize in areas such as English linguistics and communication, North American studies, or British and postcolonial literary and cultural studies. For those pursuing a teaching career in high schools and comprehensive schools, the program requires studying two subjects. Alongside English, students must choose a second subject and engage in educational sciences. This program is designed to provide a well-rounded education, preparing students for various professional paths while fostering a deep understanding of the English language and its cultural contexts.

Applicants for the bachelor's program at the University of Bonn must have knowledge of the German language at least at level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages ​​(GeR); The proof is a university entrance qualification acquired in German at a German-speaking institution, a German language test (e.g.: DSH 2, TestDaF at the TDN 4 level) or an equivalent qualification. When applying for the Master of Education at the University of Bonn, applicants must therefore demonstrate knowledge of German at level C2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages ​​(e.g. through the “German language test for university entrance”) based on Section 49 Paragraph 10 HG (DSH) at level 3). The university offers the opportunity to take a preparatory course for the DSH exam at the University of Bonn.
