Matter to Life
Subjects: Matter to Life
M.Sc. | Master of Science
Course description
Matter to Life delves into fascinating areas like bionanotechnology and synthetic biology. In bionanotechnology, scientists use synthetic nanoblocks from biomaterials to create molecular machines. These tiny machines could one day move on their own, act as catalysts, or apply mechanical forces. Imagine nanometer-sized shuttles that can precisely target cancer cells. Synthetic biology tackles the challenge of manipulating biological systems at the cellular level to create entirely new functions. For instance, bacterial strains might be programmed to perform mathematical tasks, like counting to ten. They could also produce new raw materials and medicines or recycle waste. Another exciting goal is to build life-like minimal systems from individual components. This could lead to the creation of artificial cells capable of reproduction or self-movement. DNA computing, another branch of synthetic biology, explores the programmability of DNA. The vision here is to use DNA as a new storage medium and a programmable biomaterial for biological computing machines. Additionally, researchers aim to quantitatively describe and model biological systems to predict their behavior reliably. This modeling could offer a fresh perspective on what defines living systems, deepening our understanding of biological processes and advancing basic research. By studying these subjects within the Matter to Life program, we can
