Course description

A biotechnologist dives deep into natural (micro)biological processes, tweaking them to fit the needs of a specific product, and then scales these processes for industrial production. To excel in this field, one needs a solid grasp of micro- and molecular biology. This knowledge is crucial for tapping into the vast genetic resources from bacteria, fungi, or plants, and for optimizing the metabolism of production systems. But that's not all. Chemical knowledge is also essential. Developing biocatalytic processes requires an understanding of chemistry. Biocatalysis forms the backbone of innovative and sustainable synthetic routes in chemistry, making reactions with enzymatic steps more eco-friendly. Moreover, procedural engineering knowledge is vital. A biotechnologist must take lab-developed processes and scale them up to industrial levels, ensuring they are equipped with custom processing solutions. This means mastering the integration of biology, chemistry, and process engineering.
