Science, Technology & Medicine in the Ancient World
Subjects: History;Technology;Medicine
M.Sc. | Master of Science
Course description
The "Science, Technology and Medicine in the Ancient World" master's degree program delves into the diverse realms and contexts of the ancient world where the transmission and evolution of knowledge and scientific thought were pivotal. Central to this program is the belief that humans, across all eras and regions, have utilized signs—both observable and conventional—to interpret their surroundings. However, it is with the advent of knowledge practices embedded in artifacts, and particularly with the creation of notational systems in the fourth millennium BCE, that we can trace the development of the calculating mind through history. In this program, you will explore both textual and non-textual records, with a primary focus on textual elements to guide your understanding of non-textual materials. This interdisciplinary approach ensures a comprehensive understanding of how ancient civilizations developed and transmitted scientific knowledge, providing a rich context for the study of ancient science, technology, and medicine.
